What you own
What you owe
A number once is interesting. A trend is useful. WealthTrunk keeps the history, charts it over time, and projects where it's heading. Import the file you just made to get started faster.
Try the appHow to calculate your net worth
List what you own
Cash and checking, savings, brokerage and retirement accounts, your home, vehicles, and anything else with real resale value. Use current market value, not what you paid.
List what you owe
Mortgage balance, car loans, student loans, credit cards, and any personal or medical debt. Use the current payoff balance rather than the original amount borrowed.
Subtract
Assets minus liabilities. A negative result is normal for anyone early in a career with student debt or a new mortgage — the direction it moves matters far more than the starting point.
Track it over time
One snapshot tells you little. The same calculation every few months shows whether the trend is going the way you want, which is the actual point of the exercise.
What counts on each side
| Assets — what you own | Liabilities — what you owe |
|---|---|
| Checking, savings, money market, cash | Credit card balances |
| Brokerage and investment accounts | Mortgage and HELOC |
| Retirement accounts and pensions | Vehicle loans |
| 529, Coverdell, UTMA/UGMA and custodial accounts | Student loans |
| Home and other real estate | Personal and family loans |
| Vehicles and valuables worth listing | Medical and tax debt |
Have a pension or annuity? Use the pension value calculator to turn the monthly income into a lump sum first, then add that figure as an asset here.
About the CSV export
The download button produces a file matching WealthTrunk's account import format: every column the importer expects, your accounts as rows, and liabilities written as negative balances. It's created in your browser and saved to your device — this page has no server and nothing is transmitted.
- Import path: Settings → Import Data (CSV) → Accounts → Import.
- Everything is reviewable. Imported accounts land under Pending Imports so you can check and assign them before they join your net worth.
- Rates and contributions default to zero. Add those in the app where you can also set owners, currencies and projections.
- There's more customization in the app. Create custom account types and tax categories, set logos and colors, and organize accounts however makes sense for your family.
- Need the blank template instead? The CSV templates page has both import templates with the full column reference.
Net worth FAQ
How do you calculate net worth?
Add up everything you own — cash, investments, retirement accounts, property, vehicles — then subtract everything you owe: mortgages, loans, credit card balances. What's left is your net worth. It can be negative, which is common early on when student loans or a mortgage outweigh savings.
What should I include as an asset?
Anything with real resale or cash value: bank accounts, brokerage and retirement accounts, your home and vehicles, and valuables worth enough to matter. Use what something would realistically sell for today, not what you paid. Most people leave out furniture and everyday possessions because the values are small and hard to pin down.
Should I include my house and mortgage?
Yes, both — the home's market value as an asset and the outstanding mortgage as a liability. The difference between them is your equity. Leaving out either side distorts the picture.
How often should I update it?
Monthly or quarterly is plenty for most people. What matters is the trend over years rather than any single figure, and checking too often mostly just tracks market noise.
What happens to the CSV file I download?
It's generated in your browser and saved to your device. Nothing is uploaded — this page has no server to send it to. The file is formatted for WealthTrunk's account importer so you can load everything at once instead of adding accounts one by one.
Is my data stored anywhere?
Only in your own browser, so your entries are still there when you come back. Nothing is transmitted, and clearing your browser data removes it.
